Concussions seem to be a frequent topic hitting the news, particularly in the world of professional sports. However, anyone with a brain is susceptible to the injury and should know more about how to avoid and/or properly treat the injury. A while back, I sat down with Dr. Crawford – Chiropractic Sports Science Specialist, Board Member of the Canadian Academy of Pain Management, Certified in Concussion Diagnosis and Management, Certified in Vestibular Rehabilitation – for a two-part, recorded conversation about concussions. The first podcast was an incredibly informative discussion about the mechanism (what causes the injury) and diagnosis of concussion. If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the first podcast, you can find the conversation here.
Today, we’re focusing on the second half of our conversation (Episode 11 of the DrumFIT podcast – available below), covering the topics of Prevention and Diagnosis of Concussion (how do you know if you have a concussion and are seeing the proper specialist to address your symptoms). How can you avoid potential injury? How can you encourage your students or children to speak up about symptoms? Where should you go for proper treatment? Dr. Crawford addresses all of these questions and more.
Dr. Crawford is incredibly knowledgeable about the brain and has been an integral part of my personal Concussion and Post Concussion Syndrome recovery. We hope that the information provided will help you better understand the risks associated with concussions, the steps that should be taken to minimize these risks, as well as where to go for proper diagnosis and treatment.
